Learning Objectives and Success Criteria

This fall, a school-wide committee comprised of teachers, specialists, and administrators worked to research best practice for using learning objectives and success criteria in our teaching. The group explored these resources, engaged in discussion and debate about what this would look like "in the wild." Keeping in mind the diversity of developmental ages, cultural backgrounds (of learners and teachers), programme philosophies, represented at our school, and indeed the context and type of learning experience itself, we avoided creating a cut-and-dry formula for using and communicating learning objectives and success criteria to students.

Instead, we worked to craft principles and components that will function as a guide as our school sections (British, Elementary, Middle, High) as we strive towards teaching and learning excellence at Seoul Foreign School.

We also gathered video clips of teachers in their classrooms, showing the variety of ways they communicate learning objectives and success criteria to their students, including the co-construction of LOs and SC to promote agency in our students.

Members of the LO and SC committee presented at a school-wide faculty meeting in early January, passing the torch to the separate sections to make the principles and components alive in their schools.

What is the relationship between tone and expectations?

Mr. Romagnolo says, "Your expectations are what you allow them to do, not what you say." How could you apply this distinction in your own class?

What could you do if a positive tone wasn't set on the first day?

The five principles of Classroom Culture: Discipline, Control, Management, Engagement and Influence

Discipline - Many teachers do not take the time to teach their students what successful learning behaviour looks like
Management - The reinforcing of behavior needs to go hand in hand with the other four principals
Control - The capacity to cause someone to do what you ask. The importance of language and relationships
Influence - Getting students to believe. (Getting them to behave is more visible).
Engagement - Giving students plenty to say "yes" to, get involved in, lose themselves in. Transformation often begins with outside influences - Students often change from the "outside in"

There is synergy between these five principles.
